Santal Report: DC apologises for derogatory term, Now HC seeks explanation from SP

Staff Correspondent.

The High Court yesterday exempted the Gaibandha deputy commissioner from personal appearance before it after he apologised to the court for a derogatory term he used in a report over a November 6 attack on the Santals in the district's Gobindaganj upazila.
In the report submitted to the HC on November 30, Deputy Commissioner Md Abdus Samad had stated that Santals and "Bangalee miscreants" locked in a clash with workers of a sugar mill.
Hearing a petition on December 6, the HC said the Pakistani occupation forces used such words as "Bangalee dushkritikari" (Bangalee miscreants).
Accepting the apology made by DC Md Abdus Samad as per the court's December 6 order, the HC bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath yesterday summoned the district's superintendent of police asking him to appear before it on January 2 and explain the reasons for using such terms after Samad said he used the words as the SP used similar words in his report submitted to the local administration.
The judges passed the order when hearing the petition filed by three rights bodies including Ain o Salish Kendra seeking necessary order on the Santal issue and fixed December 14 for passing next order.
The clash broke out among the Santals, Rangpur Sugar Mills staff and police over the eviction of the ethnic minority community from a disputed land in the upazila, leaving three Santal men dead and 20 others, including nine policemen, injured.
Following the rights bodies' petition, the HC on November 17 directed the government to ensure security and free movement of the Santals, to allow them to harvest paddy and to submit a report on legal steps taken as regards the attack.
