SANTALE EDUCATION
Santali Education

At present Santal community are the most progressive among Indian tribals. A large number of this community lives in West Bengal. But for financial reason greater Santal community are lacking behind. Their main lively-hood is daily labor. They are engaged as helper for construction of roads buildings and agriculture fieldsas this daily labor job is their main earning source that’s why they did properly adopt the progress of education . Although in Murshidabad, Birbhum or in Purulia there are lot of school s meant only for Santals.
But for going schools they used to face a lot of hurdles. As the schools are situated far distance from resident they lost interest to go there as its time taking. The teachers have no intension and not even any interest to keep contact with the students for poor salary. Moreover the main problem behind this is the problems of Santali Script. Language of many tribes have been obsolete as they are mixed with the other culture. But this Astro-Asiatic old language is still prevailing due to Santals bondage. According to scholars this oldest language has influenced on Sanskrit and for this reason Bengali language is also in deleted. But for a long time Santal language remains in oral form. During British period missionaries tried to spread education among them, but the medium of study was English and the script was Roman. After independence the Santals started their study in the language in which state they belong. So Santal literature is being form ‘Debnagari’ in Bihar Jharkhand, in West Bengal Bengali script, in Assam Assamese script, in some places Roman script. So how Santal of Bihar and Jharkhand will follow West Bengal’s Santali literature. So the literature link between this states not being widely contact. Noted scholar Pandit Raghunath Murmu have tried to make solution of this. In 1925 he invented the Alchiki script for Santal language. But no other except West Bengal has recognized it.

We know that the tribal oral traditional songs, folktales, kudum(rhyme), proverbs, Binti(lyrics) are very rich in nature. And it can be spread among greater Santal community by education, with this Santal’s enriching culture we will reach to greatest world.

We Abhaash dakshin kolkata, a drama society have taken some steps for educational expansion among Santals. This programme will be followd in two steps----

1) Short term
2) Long term

1) Short term: We can attract Santali children for basic education. As they do not come to schools due to economical barriers, we can reach to them. To overcome this we will step up Mobile Education Centre in the following way-

A) We can act some short educational plays to the children
B) Except that we can teach them for there education and health through small workshops of general knowledge, drawing painting, dance, music etc. We can also involve them in characters of drama through which our communication can grow up with them.

2) Long term: Following measures will be taken :-

a) We can teach those plays to some educated Santals as they can also encourage their children in terns by reproducing of the same.
b) We will discuss to the villagers about their problem and that can match with our thoughts.
c) We can arrange conference between teacher and villagers by this communication gap can be sorted between them.
d) We will discuss with other organization about different procedure that can be implemented. And we can also join with them.

We have chosen two places for this project :

One is Balarampur thana in Purulia and Nabagram block in Murshidabad. Under this procedure we have with us two co-coordinators in these places. Jaladhar Karmakar at Balarampur and Abrab Hussain at Murshidabad. Already a team was visited those places and surveyed for this project.
